Thelma Smith


In Naomi’s last letter to Beth she insists her granddaughter needs to visit an old friend of hers, Thelma Smith, an academic who researched Jewish mysticism at the University of Wales in Lampeter. Naomi entrusted Thelma with the Blue Book of Nevern – four journals in which she described her otherworldly journeys and the mystical information she gained on her travels.

In Sigil I, Beth decides to visit the Ritman Library in Amsterdam – but neglects to call on Thelma before she leaves, so she doesn’t get to read the very helpful hints that Naomi had bequeathed.

There is a mystery about Thelma that will be revealed gradually over the course of the four Sigils. What won’t be revealed in the story is why she has been given this name. But I might consider explaining that later. Perhaps…
